WakeWonder Hike at Swift Creek Bluffs @ Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve

Explore one of seven WakeWonders on this early spring hike at TLC’s Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve. This hike is being led in partnership with the WakeNature Preserves Partnership. Michael Schafale of the NC Natural Heritage Program will help participants identify the beautiful, and hopefully, some of the rare wildflowers found at Swift Creek Bluffs. The free hike will begin at 2pm from the main parking area. Please bring water and dress according to the weather. There are no bathrooms available at Swift Creek Bluffs.

Horton Grove Nature Preserve with Sarah P. Duke Gardens @ Horton Grove Nature Preserve

At just over 708 acres, Horton Grove Nature Preserve is the Triangle Land Conservancy’s largest preserve. Once part of Stagville Plantation, Horton Grove Nature Preserve contains five miles of streams, almost eight miles of trails, and an amazing range of habitats and ecologies. Participants will arrive at Horton Grove in the evening to enjoy the sunset and twilight in an evocative landscape. Ken Moore will show you a rare, fairly undisturbed grove of Piedmont Forest and restored prairies.

The Gardens will supply binoculars. Please come dressed for moderate hiking. Participants will meet at the site. Directions supplied and carpooling can be coordinated. A participation agreement will be required of each participant.

Instructor: Ken Moore, former assistant director, North Carolina Botanical Garden

Location: meet at Horton Grove Nature Preserve. Directions will be sent.

Fee: Gardens members $12; general public $15

Participant limit: 15

Qualifies for Home Horticulture Certificate elective credit (2 hours).

Qualifies for Nature Photography Certificate optional course.

Get Wild! Creek Critters @ Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve

IMG_5519Come learn about the many creatures that call Swift Creek home. We’ll search for crayfish, salamanders, and tadpoles. Come prepared to walk in the creek itself and dip in the temporary pools. This program is open to families with children ages 5 and up, children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please wear closed-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty (we recommend old sneakers or rain boots).

Trail Crew-December @ Brumley Forest Nature Preserve

Join us in improving lives through conservation by helping TLC to prepare Brumley Forest Nature Preserve for a public opening in Spring of 2017! This Brumley Forest work day will be focused on hand digging a multi-use trail system that will be available for hiking and mountain biking. By the time it opens, Brumley Forest will have over 12 miles of trail through some of the most beautiful land in Orange County!

Volunteers should be six years of age of older and minors must be accompanied by an adult or guardian. Please register below so we have an approximate head count!

Birding with Colleen @ Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve

Explore one of seven WakeWonders on this early morning birding excursion at TLC’s Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve. Join Colleen Bockhahn of Wake Audubon Society to meet the many birds that call this small nature preserve home and some that might just be passing through. Please bring water, binoculars if you have them, and dress according to the weather. There are no bathrooms available at Swift Creek Bluffs.

Winter Tree ID Hike @ White Pines Nature Preserve

Grand Trees of Chatham will have a Winter Tree ID Hike at White Pines Nature Preserve on Sunday, February 25 at 1:00 pm.  Andy Upshaw and Phil Cox will lead the hike which will focus on identifying some of the beautiful trees and other natural features at White Pines.  The hike is about 2 miles long and is moderately strenuous.  Please no pets or children under 5 years.  Please wear footwear and clothing appropriate for dirt trails and the cold.

Directions to White Pines Nature Preserve:

White Pines Nature Preserve Preserve is located just past the Rocky River heading South from Pittsboro on 15-501, first left on River Forks Rd after crossing the Rocky River.  River Forks Rd is a circular Rd so one can go left or right after coming off 15-501.  The preserve is at the end of a small gravel/dirt road that comes off River Forks Rd, there is a sign marking the preserve and there is parking at the end of the road.   The address is 548 S Rocky River Rd, Sanford, NC.

First Saturday Walk at Swift Creek Bluffs @ Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve

Explore one of seven Wake Wonders on the first Saturday of February at TLC’s Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve. This guided hike will take us all throughout Swift Creek Bluffs, giving us the chance to see the entirety of this small yet beautiful preserve which is a gem in the midst of Raleigh development.  The hike will take us on the Stairway to Heaven in order to scale the bluffs for a wonderful view, but it is a bit challenging so plan accordingly. The free hike will begin at 10:30 am  from the main parking area. Please bring water and dress according to the weather. Leashed pets are welcome.  There are no bathrooms available at Swift Creek Bluffs.
