For that, we deserve a trophy! Come celebrate with us at Trophy Brewing & Taproom on Maywood Avenue in Raleigh on February 19, the week of our founding! Join us for a brewery tour at 5:30pm and learn from the brew masters how the entire brewing process begins with clean water. Then, experience for yourself what beer brewed with water from a TLC protected watershed tastes like with one free tasting of Trophy beers brewed on the premises. Additional drinks available for purchase, light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.

New Hope Creek Volunteer Cleanup @ NC Wildlife Resources Commission's New Hope Waterfowl Impoundment

Trash Pile Big Sweep 2006On Saturday, March 12 from 9am to Noon, join Clean Jordan Lake as a volunteer to help intercept trash before it gets to the shoreline. This is a new initiative to complement our Adopt-A-Feeder Stream Program. The cleanup is part of the City of Durham’s Annual Creek Week, a time to discover and clean up Durham’s waterways. Volunteers will clean the banks of New Hope Creek just above where it enters the NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s New Hope Waterfowl Impoundment. They will meet at the Waterfowl Impoundment parking area off NC 54 just west of Garrett Road. Event details and RSVP are at

Explore one of seven WakeWonders on this early spring hike at TLC’s Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve. This hike is being led in partnership with the WakeNature Preserves Partnership. Michael Schafale of the NC Natural Heritage Program will help participants identify the beautiful, and hopefully, some of the rare wildflowers found at Swift Creek Bluffs. The free hike will begin at 2pm from the main parking area. Please bring water and dress according to the weather. There are no bathrooms available at Swift Creek Bluffs.

Get Wild! Creek Critters @ Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve

IMG_5519Come learn about the many creatures that call Swift Creek home. We’ll search for crayfish, salamanders, and tadpoles. Come prepared to walk in the creek itself and dip in the temporary pools. This program is open to families with children ages 5 and up, children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please wear closed-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty (we recommend old sneakers or rain boots).

SUPgraySCREENTLC partner REI is giving a special opportunity for TLC members to try Stand Up Paddleboarding with a special TLC-only discounted class! Come learn everything you need to know to get started in the exciting sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding. SUP offers a great total body workout and is a great activity for lakes, rivers and the ocean. In this class you’ll learn the proper stance for balance and control, essential paddle strokes and turning techniques, as well as how to choose the right board and paddle. Courses will be held on protected water, and no experience is necessary. Come with us to learn this hybrid of surfing and paddling and find out how to walk on water!

  • To become familiar with SUP, equipment, and proper clothing to safely and comfortably pursue SUP
  • To learn effective paddling skills, balance, positioning, movement and falling/recovery techniques
  • Introduce the rewarding aspects of SUP by highlighting the benefits, some places to paddle and the various activities that take you onto the water, with an emphasis on respect for the marine/aquatic environment.

Nature Explorers: Birds @ Chapel Hill Library

Nature Explorers-Birds 2Come join TLC at the Chapel Hill library for a new family series including nature themed story time. As fall birds start appearing, this is the perfect time to learn more about our feathered friends. We’ll read a story about birds, make our own bird feeders, and try our hands at constructing nests.

Please register through the library. This program is perfect for children ages 4+ with an adult.

Fall Trail Crew Kick Off! @ Brumley Forest Nature Preserve, Chapel Hill

DSC_0140Brumley Forest Nature Preserve will open to the public in Spring of 2017, but we need your help to get it ready! Trail Crew volunteers assist with stewardship of TLC properties approximately one Saturday per month throughout the year, this Brumley Forest work day will be the kick off for the fall season of Trail Crew.

On September 24th, volunteers will help prepare Brumley Forest Nature Preserve for its public opening in Spring! Tasks may include building trails, constructing railing on boardwalks, removing invasive species, etc. This workday is being supported by our friends at REI, Johnson Subaru, and TORCREI will be providing snacks, t-shirts and swag for participating volunteers and Subaru will be showing off one of their best outdoor adventure vehicles!

Volunteers should be six years of age of older and minors must be accompanied by an adult or guardian. Please register below so we have an approximate head count!

Come join TLC and Hike It Baby for a special hike in honor of National Take a Child Outside Week. We will have a nature objects show and tell with turtle shells, antlers, feathers, and fossils for little ones to touch and hold, before a gentle 1 and a half mile hike following the creek through the shaded woods of Johnston Mill Nature Preserve. We’ll walk at a flexible rate to accommodate children riding in carriers and walking on their own. This walk is perfect for families with children ages 0-5. Registration is required.

Get Wild! Nature Detectives @ Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve

Join us at Swift Creek Bluffs to find out – we’ll be learning how to track local critters through tracks, scat, and other signs. After some practice, we’ll head out on an animal tracking adventure! We’ll also make animal tracks of our own to take home.

This program is open to families with children ages 4 and up. Remember to dress for the weather, and to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty.

First Saturday Walk at Swift Creek Bluffs @ Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve

Explore one of seven Wake Wonders on the first Saturday of February at TLC’s Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve. This guided hike will take us all throughout Swift Creek Bluffs, giving us the chance to see the entirety of this small yet beautiful preserve which is a gem in the midst of Raleigh development.  The hike will take us on the Stairway to Heaven in order to scale the bluffs for a wonderful view, but it is a bit challenging so plan accordingly. The free hike will begin at 10:30 am  from the main parking area. Please bring water and dress according to the weather. Leashed pets are welcome.  There are no bathrooms available at Swift Creek Bluffs.
