Join TLC’s Associate Director of Conservation and Stewardship Leigh Ann Hammerbacher to learn the long history of TLC’s acquisition of Walnut Hill, soon to be the largest greenspace destination on the 26 Mile Neuse River Greenway in Wake County! We are preparing to open Walnut Hill to the public in the next couple of years but just couldn’t wait to share our plans with our members. This special property has lots to offer Wake County residents, and we want our members to be the first to see it!
This event is open to TLC members only. Become a member today by donating to TLC!
Join TLC as we hunt for bugs, bees, and other pollinators. We’ll search the grasslands, stream banks, and forest floors for an up close look at the many types of beetles, butterflies, ants, and millipedes which call Horton Grove Nature Preserve home. We will learn some of the important ways insects help our environment and talk about which insects are safe to hold and which should be observed from a distance. We’ll also talk about how the native grassland at Horton Grove supports pollinator insects. This program is perfect for anyone interested in insects and families with children ages 4 and up.
We will meet in the larger parking area by Holman and Peaks Loop Trails. Coming from Old Oxford Road, you will enter by the historic barns and drive several minutes down the gravel road to the main parking lot.
Come help us keep Horton Grove Nature Preserve looking clean and pristine. We’ll have a Garbage Bingo Contest and educational activities for kids as we clean-up the preserve trails and borders. This is a great volunteer opportunity for families with children ages 6+.
Please wear closed-toed shoes. You can bring your own work gloves if you have them or borrow a pair of TLC’s.
TLC is creating an educational trail at Brumley Forest Nature Preserve. We need your help to construct, decorate, and place cover boards and frog tubes. The cover boards and frog tubes will provide habitat for lizards, snakes, salamanders, and frogs while also making these animals easier to find and giving us the opportunity to observe and learn about a variety of amphibians and reptiles. This is also an opportunity for volunteers to see Brumley before the preserve opens to the public. Children ages 4 and up can help paint and ages 8 and up can help assemble and place the trail elements.
Please wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, and clothes that can get dirty. Volunteer activities are designed for ages 4+, though younger children are welcome to accompany the group.

Join us in improving lives through conservation by helping TLC to prepare Brumley Forest Nature Preserve for a public opening in Spring of 2017! This Brumley Forest work day will be focused on hand digging a multi-use trail system that will be available for hiking and mountain biking. By the time it opens, Brumley Forest will have over 12 miles of trail through some of the most beautiful land in Orange County!
Volunteers should be six years of age of older and minors must be accompanied by an adult or guardian. Please register below so we have an approximate head count!
Join TLC’s Land Maintenance Technician, Kyle Obermiller to get caught up on what’s happening at Walnut Hill! Soon to be the largest greenspace destination on the 26 Mile Neuse River Greenway in Wake County, plans are underway to make the most of this community resource. Part of the property will remain an active agriculture site and model for sustainable farming practices, starting with the use of cover crops on the dormant fields. Hear from Kyle why cover cropping is important, how it was planted, and what happens next. Then tour some of the picturesque features of Walnut Hill and learn what else we have in store for these 405 acres. We are preparing to open Walnut Hill to the public in the next couple of years and we want to give our members the chance to see it at every step along the way!
