Join the experienced runners of Bull City Running Co. for a fun morning adventure on the beautiful trails of Brumley Forest Nature Preserve. Bull City Running Co. is dedicated to building a community of runners and walkers by creating a fun, informative, and inspiring place for people pursuing their fitness goals. Come explore the trails of Triangle Land Conservancy’s newest nature preserve with the experts. This will be a no drop, 4 mile trail run, all paces welcome!

 

Mountain Biking Skills Clinic 1: Braking @ Brumley Forest Nature Preserve-Main Expo Area

As Triangle Land Conservancy celebrates the opening of Brumley Forest Nature Preserve, you’re invited to join REI’s expert mountain biking instructors for a free 20-minute clinic on braking, and learn to maximize your control on the trail. Topics covered include cockpit setup, body positioning, and braking techniques. Even experienced riders will benefit from refining this foundational skill. This clinic is free, but space is limited and registration is required.

Join representatives of Triangle Land Conservancy as they take you on a tour of some of the hot spots at Brumley Forest Nature Preserve. Tours will leave throughout the day on the half hour and last approximately 45 minutes, additional hikes will be added on the hour as needed. Guides will cover some of the things that make Brumley Forest special for conservation and the community. Stop by the Triangle Land Conservancy tent ten minutes before the hike departure time to reserve your spot. Tours will depart at:

Brumley Botanical Walk @ Depart from Main Expo Area

Meet the plants of Brumley Nature Preserve with Andrew Pais at the Brumley Grand Opening! Andrew Pais recently graduated with a Ph.D. in Plant Biology at North Carolina State University. As part of his dissertation research, Andrew conducted a population genetic study of the native Flowering Dogwood with the aim of identifying candidate genes associated with disease resistance. Andrew now works as the Plant Records and Database Coordinator at JC Raulston Arboretum and is interested facilitating citizen science and educational outreach opportunities during his spare time. Get an expert perspective on the plant life of Brumley Nature Preserve when the property is blooming with spring glory!

Forest Fort Building @ Schoolhouse of Wonder Tent

As Triangle Land Conservancy celebrates the opening of Brumley Forest Nature Preserve, you’re invited to join REI’s expert mountain biking instructors for a free 20-minute clinic on berm turns. Berm turns require different techniques than flat turns. We will develop skills, such as eye movement and body positioning, essential to flowing through berm turns. Participants can apply these skills on Brumley’s trails. braking, and learn to maximize your control on the trail. Topics covered include cockpit setup, body positioning, and braking techniques. Even experienced riders will benefit from refining this foundational skill. This clinic is free, but space is limited and registration is required.

Laughter Yoga with Liza @ Brumley Forest Nature Preserve-Main Expo Area

Laughter is the best medicine, get your dose at the Brumley Forest Grand Opening!

Laughter Yoga was founded in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor in Mumbai, India. It is about bringing out our childlike playfulness and embraces the philosophy of “acting happiness.” Research also shows that both real and fake laughter influence happiness and provide health benefits! Laughter yoga thus provides a comfortable environment where it is ok to laugh for no reason, act silly, be childlike, and fully express ourselves. Laughter Yoga also combines Yogic deep breathing with laughter exercises to bring more oxygen to the body and brain, making us feel more energetic and healthy. Combine the benefits of laughter with the healing powers of nature when you try a 30 minute laughter yoga session outside at Brumley Forest Nature Preserve. Liza from HAHA Health and Happiness Align will lead groups in beginner laughter yoga at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM and be available on site all day to answer questions.

Herp Walk @ Depart from TLC Tent

Join local herpetologist Ed Kabay to search for salamanders through the woods and along the wetlands. The rotting logs and moistened rocks of Brumley Nature Preserve make it a perfect habitat for these delicate amphibians. April is a great time to spot these slimy critters in their native habitat. Learn what to look for and where in order to spot salamanders and protect their habitat.

As Triangle Land Conservancy celebrates the opening of Brumley Forest Nature Preserve, you’re invited to join REI’s expert mountain biking instructors for a free 20-minute clinic on front wheel lifts. Front wheel lifts are an essential skill for navigating certain trail obstacles. We will focus on developing good foundational elements, including body positioning and weight transfer, with the goal of clearing small obstacles while rolling. This session will not cover jumps. This clinic is free, but space is limited and registration is required.

 There’s lots of wildlife living at Brumley Nature Preserve, join Land Technician, Kyle Obermiller as he tries to catch some of them on camera! Walk with Kyle to a couple of wildlife hot spots, learn about the wildlife living on the property, and help him install a trail camera to see if we can catch some images of them in their natural habitat!

Community Art Project @ Brumley Forest Nature Preserve-Main Expo Area

Join local weaver Jan French for a community art project inspired by the elements of Brumley Forest Nature Preserve! Conservation and creativity converge during this project, where everywhere can contribute. Jan French is a multi-fiber artist teaching in Triangle classrooms and festivals. Before she started spinning local wool and cotton, Ms. French was weaving natural materials collected from her yard. While living in Durham she earned graduate degrees in environmental management and design and worked as an environmental planner for many years. Ms. French uses a multidisciplinary and hands-on approach to help students explore new and traditional ways to work with fibers (spinning, weaving, felting, needle felting, knitting ). She enthusiastically shares her fibers hoping to inspire others to make beautiful objects and installations from natural and recycled materials.

TORC Bike Rides Round 1 @ Biking Expo Area

The Brumley Nature Preserve trails will officially open to mountain bikers at 1 PM on April 22nd! Explore the trails with experienced guides from Triangle Off-Road Cyclists who helped to build the trails and will assist Triangle Land Conservancy to steward them.

1:00- Advanced (10+ mph pace)

1:15- Begintermediates (6-7 mph pace)

1:30-  Intermediates (8-9 mph pace)

1:45- Beginners who want to do the entire 9 mile route, but at a sightseeing, casual pace under 6 mph (this will take at least 1.5 hours)

2:00- Very Beginner/Children (short route)

Whittling for Beginners @ Schoolhouse of Wonder Tent

Fly Fishing Demo @ The Pond, Brumley Forest Nature Preserve

Keep it reel at the Brumley Grand Opening with a Fly Fishing Demo from the pros at Great Outdoor Provision Company! Join instructor Jim by the Brumley pond as he does casting demonstrations along with an opportunity for you to try your hand at casting a fly rod. Learn the basics of fly fishing for mountain trout, local warm water fish, and even saltwater fly fishing opportunities in NC. By the end of this demo we’re confident you’ll be hooked on fly fishing and spend the rest of the day thinking all about that bass.

Batala Durham Performance @ Main Expo Area-Brumley Forest Nature Preserve

Batalá is an international samba reggae music project based in Salvador de Bahia in northeastern Brazil. The name Batalá is a combination of the phrase “bateu lá” meaning “hit there” in Portuguese and Obatalá (Oxalá), the Candomblé deity who is the father of the Orixas and of all humanity. Batalá Durham is the newest branch of the Batalá family in North America, come to Brumley to hear them beat their drums to welcome this new nature preserve to our community!

Brumley Forest Trail Run @ Depart from TLC Tent
Apr 22 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Join members of local running group, the Trailheads and professionals from Balanced Movement Studio for a group trail run at Brumley Forest Nature Preserve. We will start with a brief trail overview, safe trail running education and dynamic warm up.  Group runs to follow, distance and pace determined by participant preference (3-10 mile). All levels welcome!
