Caterpillars Count! Citizen Science @ Johnston Mill (Secondary Entrance)
May 19 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Do you want to be a scientist? Do you think bugs are cool? Come visit our Johnston Mill Nature Preserve and participate in the citizen science project Caterpillars Count! No prior knowledge is necessary and all ages are welcome.

We will meet at the Turkey Farm entrance to Johnston Mill and hike to the plot sites of tagged trees. There we will be joined by members of the Hurlbert Lab at UNC who will take us through every step of the project including being shown the methods of capturing accurate counts of arthropods on the branches of tagged trees. You do not need to bring anything, other than good walking shoes and a full water bottle. If you would like to read more on the project or view the virtual training video prior to heading out you can learn more here: https://caterpillarscount.unc.edu/getStarted/

This is a free volunteering event. Please make sure to register on our VolunteerHub website here.

Current Mask Policy: TLC seeks to build a supportive, mask-friendly environment in all collaborations with staff and the public. Please wear a mask if you are not vaccinated, or if that makes you feel most comfortable. We will have masks available if you would like to wear one during an event. We also encourage those eligible to be vaccinated to get their Covid-19 vaccine and booster shot. If you are experiencing any Covid-related symptoms, please stay home and attend a program another day. Our top priority is to create a safe environment for our community. Thank you for your understanding.

Volunteer Appreciation Cook Out @ Brumley Preserve (Volunteer Entrance)
Jun 29 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Join us in celebration of you! We want to say thank you to all of our volunteers for dedicating their time and effort to help us make the Triangle a more vibrant and healthy region. And what better way to do that than with a good ol’ fashioned summer hotdog cookout. Please bring those that you want to celebrate with you, even if they aren’t TLC volunteers. We will have dinner catered by Dang Good Dogs and lawn games along with some awards and prizes presented to some special volunteers! You will receive a form to submit your dinner requests in the confirmation email when you register.

This is a free event to celebrate you but we do still ask that you register your entire party so that we can know how many to expect. Make sure to save your spot here!
