Caterpillars Count! Citizen Science @ Johnston Mill (Secondary Entrance)
May 19 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Do you want to be a scientist? Do you think bugs are cool? Come visit our Johnston Mill Nature Preserve and participate in the citizen science project Caterpillars Count! No prior knowledge is necessary and all ages are welcome.

We will meet at the Turkey Farm entrance to Johnston Mill and hike to the plot sites of tagged trees. There we will be joined by members of the Hurlbert Lab at UNC who will take us through every step of the project including being shown the methods of capturing accurate counts of arthropods on the branches of tagged trees. You do not need to bring anything, other than good walking shoes and a full water bottle. If you would like to read more on the project or view the virtual training video prior to heading out you can learn more here: https://caterpillarscount.unc.edu/getStarted/

This is a free volunteering event. Please make sure to register on our VolunteerHub website here.

Current Mask Policy: TLC seeks to build a supportive, mask-friendly environment in all collaborations with staff and the public. Please wear a mask if you are not vaccinated, or if that makes you feel most comfortable. We will have masks available if you would like to wear one during an event. We also encourage those eligible to be vaccinated to get their Covid-19 vaccine and booster shot. If you are experiencing any Covid-related symptoms, please stay home and attend a program another day. Our top priority is to create a safe environment for our community. May 21 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Join Triangle Land Conservancy on an adventure through the world of the pollinator at our Horton Grove Nature Preserve. Channel your inner wizard to find your pollinator charm, learn about their life cycle, and how they help ensure that we have food on our tables. Put yourself in the shoes of an ant or the wings of a bat to discover how creatures other than bumble bees are essential pollinators. Triangle Land Conservancy’s mission of preserving natural habitat, safeguarding clean water, supporting local farms and food, and connecting people with nature are all interconnected with this program, so come Get Wild and see if you are a Pollinator Wizard!

White Pines Tour @ White Pines Nature Preserve (Lower Lot)
Jun 4 @ 8:30 am – 11:00 am

Join one of our monthly First Saturday Walks this June! This beautiful hike will meander through our beautiful and diverse White Pines Nature Preserve. Because of it’s incredible ecosystem, surrounded by the White Pine and cooled by the confluence of the Rocky and Deep Rivers, it can be up to 10 degrees cooler than the neighboring city of Pittsboro! So it is an excellent location to escape our North Carolina heat.

This will be a moderate 3-mile hike over about 2 hours. There will be multiple stops along the way to learn about the ecology and the history of the preserve. Please make sure to wear good walking shoes and bring a full water bottle along with bug spray and sunscreen if you would like it!

This is a free event, but preregistration is required. Make sure to save your spot here!

Get Wild! Trail Detectives! @ Brumley Southeast
Jun 4 @ 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Join TLC to celebrate National Trails Day with your little ones on our newest trail system. We will have to put on our detectives hats with a magnify glass to see what kind of evidence of wildlife we can find on our hike. On this 2-3 mile hike we will take several stops to identify common plants, see if we can find any wildlife tracks, and maybe even find some evidence of beavers! This is a longer hike for young kids, so this will be best for ages 7-12. Younger and older siblings are of course welcome, but guardians may need to plan for tired legs.

This event is part of our monthly Get Wild series for children and families. This is a free event but preregistration is required. Make sure to save you and your child’s spot at this link!

Birding at Brumley North @ Brumley North Parking Lot
Jun 11 @ 8:30 am – 11:00 am

Come join us on one of our wonderful First Saturday Walks! This will be at our Brumley North Nature Preserve and we will be on the lookout for any and all birds that we can find. Our Brumley Birding hike will be an easy 1.5 mile hike over about 2 hours with many stops along the way. Please wear good walking shoes, bring a water bottle, and binoculars if you have them. We suggest that you leave your furry friends at home for this hike as they may scare away wildlife viewing opportunities.
