PLANT COMMUNITIES OF THE NORTH CAROLINA PIEDMONT

 5 Saturdays, Sept. 11 – Oct. 9 from 9:00 am – Noon

In-person and mostly outdoors with instructor Paul Cameron, M.S. Environmental Education and teaching assistant Greg Price, environmental management consultant and educator

Co-sponsored by Triangle Land Conservancy and Duke Gardens.

The plant communities in North Carolina’s piedmont tell a story of our natural history. You can know quite a bit about the soil and moisture available by looking at the mix of plants at a location. Paul and Greg will introduce you to the plant communities found in our piedmont and how you can use that to understand the three most common drainage regimes. The class will also discuss plant succession – the loosely predictable transitions that convert a site from bare soil to mature forest over time.

Class text: Field Guide to the Piedmont by Michael Godfrey, please purchase in advance and read Chapter 4, pp. 76-87 before the first class.
