George and Julia Brumley Family Nature Preserve in Orange County
Durham, NC (April 5, 2017) – Triangle Land Conservancy announced today that it will host an Earth Day grand opening on April 22nd, 2017 for the 613-acre George and Julia Brumley Family Nature Preserve. The address is 3055 New Hope Church Rd., Chapel Hill, NC, 27514.
Beginning at 9am and running until 5pm, the festivities will include an array of outdoor activities including guided hikes by TLC staff and partner organizations, runs, laughter yoga, children’s activities, a community art project, and musical performances. REI will lead mountain bike skills classes in the morning trails open to bikers in the afternoon with guided rides led by Triangle Offroad Cyclists. Local food and drink available from Fullsteam Brewery, Flirting with Fire Pizza, Maple View Mobile, and Bandido’s Mexican Café. Visit with TLC partners including Schoolhouse of Wonder, Mountains to Sea Trail, HikeNC!, HAHA Studio, Piedmont Wildlife Center, Compost Now, TrailHeads, Murphy’s Naturals, and more!
The Brumley Preserve was designed as a model for sustainable land management practices and recreation. The 15 miles of trails were built with the help of hundreds of volunteers to complement the contours of the land, reduce run off, and connect people with the best natural elements that this property has to offer. The trails on the preserve will provide a mix of hiking-only and mixed-use (mountain biking and hiking) trails.

The Brumley Preserve was acquired in 2010 and this Earth Day opening is the culmination of years of work. “Brumley Preserve supports three of Triangle Land Conservancy’s four public benefits: it safeguards clean water, protects natural habitats, and it will help connect our community with nature,” said TLC Board Chair and Parker Poe Partner Russell Killen. “I am proud that, over the past three decades, TLC has protected more than 18,000 acres for the benefit of generations to come. It’s especially rewarding to see our work continuing in the Triangle with the opening of a place as special as Brumley, which is within a 30 minute drive of almost a million residents.”
Triangle Land Conservancy extends gratitude to the many organizations and individuals who made significant contributions towards the 2010 purchase of the property including the Zeist Foundation, NC’s Clean Water Management Trust Fund, the Warner Foundation, City of Raleigh’s Clean Water Protection Program, Orange County, Nancy and Edwin Preston, and private donors to the Pearson Stewart Land Opportunity Fund established through TLC’s Our Water, Our Land campaign.
