Don’t let the winter keep you from having adventures! Check out a few of the Devil’s Stomping Ground Scenic Byway stops this weekend when you visit House in the Horseshoe, Bud’s Barbeque, and the Deep River Camelback Truss Bridge. For this trip bring some coffee or hot chocolate in a thermos to take in some of North Carolina’s favorite places.

10 a.m. A North Carolina Historic site, the House in the Horseshoe, 288 Alston House Rd, Sanford, NC, is a plantation house named for the unique shape of the Deep River. Built in the 1770s, the house is a spot of both revolutionary war activity (it still sports bullet holes) and the home of four-term North Carolina governor, Benjamin Williams. The exterior of the house includes typical features of a coastal lowland home, while a visitor to the interior can gaze at antiques from the colonial and early-Federal period.
Note: the House in the Horseshoe is closed on Sundays.

11 a.m. Take a twenty-five minute cruise to Bud’s Barbecue, 817 Cumnock Rd, Sanford, NC, a Devil’s Stomping Ground Scenic Byway favorite. This local restaurant features real Carolina barbecue for low prices, and customers keep returning for the ribs, pulled pork, collard greens, cobbler, and other southern favorites.

12:30 p.m. Break out the coffee and hot chocolate for the Deep River Camelback Truss Bridge and park, 3485 R. Jordan Rd, Gulf, NC. Barely five minutes from Bud’s, the 40 acre park offers scenic views of the bridge, built in 1908. Featured in the National Register of Historic Places and the North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame, the park offers picnic tables and great place for a cup of coffee while watching the river. Though this is a daytime itinerary, the bridge is beautifully lit up at night.
