Take a spin around New Hill and Raleigh this weekend with a long walk in the woods at Harris Lake County Park, followed by delicious, farm-to-table appetizers at Glenwood Grill.

2:30 p.m. Arrive at Harris Lake County Park, 2112 County Park Drive, New Hill, NC. At 680 acres, the park sits on a peninsula stretching out into Harris Lake. The park offers biking and hiking all year round, as well as seasonal boating, fishing, and even disc-golf.

From the parking area take the Peninsula Trail, a five mile expanse that meanders along the water and around the Longleaf Pine Management Area. According to the NC Birding Trail, this area is “good for forest and edge-related songbirds, as well as wintering waterfowl.” The winter is an especially great time to keep an ear out for native woodpeckers.

A history trail side loop offers visitors the chance to learn about the park’s farming history, including the lives and activities of the Womble family. It is marked by trail signs and double orange trail markers.

5:00 p.m. Hop in the car and head to Raleigh’s Glenwood Grill for a round of well-deserved appetizers, found on 2603 Glenwood Avenue. Featuring “low country southern food from the coast,” Glenwood’s appetizers range from $5 to $9 and include fried green tomatoes ($7), lobster mac & cheese ($9), and shrimp & corn griddle cakes ($8).

Note: Glenwood Grill is open from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays.
