Events

TLC has a wide array of events and outings planned for Spring 2009. Lee County White Pines Hike

Join TLC and botanist Harry LeGrand of the NC Natural Heritage Program for a tour of the Lee County White Pines region. According to LeGrand, "The northern half of this tract is one of the most beautiful spots in the Triangle, if not the state. To me, this is THE highlight of the entire White Pines area, as spectacular and notable (and completely different) as the near vertical Catawba rhododendron bluff at the main White Pines section in Chatham County." Not accessible by the general public, you'll want to be sure to register for this tour of soapstone outcrops and a beautiful, mature Basic Mesic forest along the Deep River.

Young and old are invited to meet the staff from this afterschool and summer camp program, and sample a few of the activities in store at the Irvin Learning Farm, including scavenger hunts and hayrides.

Conservation Gardens Tour

TLC’s April field trip to gardens at the peak of spring bloom celebrates the contribution of residential gardens to the health and beauty of the Triangle’s environment.

The gardens on the April garden tour, hosted jointly by TLC and the Reid Chapter of the NC Native Plants Society, illustrate ways to steward our home gardens to enrich our own lives with the delights of birdsong, flowers, shade and greenery, while enhancing the environmental health of the community. In addition to showcasing the beauty of the native woodland wild flowers and other spring pleasures, these “conservation gardens” provide wildlife habitat and demonstrate environmentally friendly practices such as water conservation, rainwater harvesting, composting, mulching and alternatives to lawn.

Site list, descriptions and map coming soon.

Flower Hill Rhodo Ramble

Join us for our traditional early May visit to Flower Hill to see the magnificent Catawba rhododendron and other wildflowers. Truly a Johnston County jewel, thousands of visitors have flocked to Flower Hill since the mid-1930s to behold the bountiful blooms. B.W. Wells, the prominent early 20th century naturalist, called Flower Hill a “freak of nature” for its natural stands of Catawba rhododendron, a mountain species out of its element amid the flat farmland of the Coastal Plain.
