Ride for the Land 2008:

Little River Roll

Saturday, July 19, 2008

Nearly 200 cyclists joined TLC on July 19, 2008, for its 3rd annual bike tour, Ride for the Land. The tour brought attention to TLC's Little River Priority Area and raised awareness of our efforts to preserve this critical piece of our natural heritage.

Check out photos from Ride for the Land 2008: The Little River Roll, taken by volunteer photographer Ty Rhudy and TLC staff.

Ride for the Land was a training ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s annual Bike MS: New Bern Ride. TLC has been pleased with the success of this event and hopes to continue the tradition of offering this fun and challenging event for cycling enthusiasts.

Cyclists often ride in areas where there is abundant open space. TLC believes that having a bike tour through one of our project areas will help raise awareness and garner support for our work to protect the Little River and other important open spaces across our region. Conservation of our natural resources will make our region a better place to live and work.

Proceeds from Ride for the Land support TLC’s conservation work in the Little River area.

About the Little River

The Little River flows from northern Orange County southeast to the Little River Reservoir in Durham County, where it serves as the main source of water for Durham residents. It then joins the Eno River which becomes the Neuse River at Falls Lake. The Little River is one of the cleanest in the state, with vibrant aquatic habitat for otter, beaver, rare freshwater mussels and many other species. Sycamores, river birches and other riparian trees edge its banks. From their branches, native and migratory birds—among them tanagers, warblers, whippoorwills and woodpeckers nest, feed, fly and sing. People can hike some of the loveliest land in Orange County along the Little River or kayak on its white water rapids.
