Deep River—The Coal Valley Paddle

June 28, 2008

As Gomer Pyle said, "Surprise, surprise, surprise!" Those who think of Chatham County only as an agricultural Eden may be shocked to learn that here in the heart of North Carolina the hopes and dreams (and schemes) of 19th century industrialists played out. Played out, literally, when the iron ore veins at Buckhorn withered. Yes, it may be hard to believe but at one time in the mid-1800s Pittsboro was on its way to being the Pittsburgh of the South.

We'll paddle the flat waters of the Deep from Deep River Park to 15-501, along the way hearing the fascinating stories of coal mines (and coal mine disasters), iron smelting, and the decades long attempt to turn the Deep into a watery super highway. Along the way we'll stop for a lunch and look and learn visit to the Endor Iron Furnace.

In keeping with our 25th Anniversary Outings theme of "bigger is better," we hornswaggled Frog Hollow Outdoors and Haw River Canoe & Kayak Company into jointly outfitting this trip. That allows us to offer twice as many places on this popular trip as usual!
