2. Holly Springs conservation easement protects Middle Creek watershed

In May, TLC accepted the donation of a conservation easement on a 112-acre farm in Holly Springs. Out of respect the for easement donor's request for no publicity, we share only these details on the conservation values conserved through this generous donation:

     * Value to the community as open space

     * Agricultural and forestry significance

     * Protection of water quality

Water quality here is the most important value. The farm is located within the Middle Creek watershed. Downstream from the farm Middle Creek is listed as a State Significant Aquatic Habitat by the NC Natural Heritage Program. Several rare and endangered aquatic species have been documented in Middle Creek including the federally endangered dwarf wedgemussel (Alasmidonta heterodon). Keeping the water flowing into Middle Creek here clean will help protect the important aquatic habitat downstream.

3. Come one, come all to TLC's Green Jamboree on June 21

Join your fellow TLC members at the Irvin Farm (Jones Ferry Road, Orange County), a 269-acre mix of farmland and forest donated to TLC by the late Elinor and J. Logan Irvin.

     Enjoy a BBQ dinner (vegetarian options), beer and soft drinks, music by The Bluegrass Experience, guided hikes, catch-and-release fishing, REI's "PEAK" program for kids and lawn games.

     Advance tickets covering the cost of entry, food and drink are just $10 per person (kids under 12 free). Tickets at the door are $15. Get your tickets now online at greenjamboree.org!

Want to get into Green Jamboree for free??? Volunteer to help! We need volunteers to take tickets, assist with parking, and staff the TLC information table. To volunteer, contact Aime Mitchell at 833-3662 ext. 116 or amitchell@tlc-nc.org.

4. Deep River "Coal Valley Paddle" on June 28 filling up! Make your reservation now

As usual, interest in the Deep River "Coal Valley Paddle" is high. Save your place on the June 28 outing by calling one of our outfitters soon. Go online for registration details and more info.

     We are very pleased to announce that local historian Edwin Patterson will once again grace this trip, leading an optional walk to the Endor Iron Furnace and telling tales from the fascinating industrial history of this would-be "Pittsburgh of the South."

The trip costs $25 per person for TLC members, $35 for non-members. That price includes canoe/kayak rental. If you're bringing your own boat, lop $5 off the price.

5. June Members of the Month – Tara & Andrew Allden

New TLC members Tara and Andrew Allden have called Chatham County home since 2004. “We chose to live where we live because of the open space, because of local farms,” says Tara. “We support TLC because we realize the need for land preservation in this area.”

     Read more about Tara and Andrew on our Member Spotlight page.

6. Ride for the Land 2008 will roll through the Little River watershed

Some of the most beautiful pastoral scenes in the Triangle region are found among the rolling hills and tidy farms of the Little River watershed in Durham and Orange counties. This area has been a conservation focus for TLC for a decade, our efforts conserving close to 2,000 acres here.

     On July 19 we're introducing the Triangle's cycling community to this beautiful area and our work to conserve it. The third annual Ride for the Land features 30-, 45-, and 60 mile routes winding through the hills and valleys of the Little River watershed.

     Register by July 7 to take advantage of our early bird special ($25). Details and registration.

7. River Society challenge can double impact of gifts to Our Water, Our Land

In May, anonymous donors issued the following challenge to their fellow River Society members:
“Make a gift or pledge* to TLC’s Our Water, Our Land campaign this year between May 1 and December 31 and we will match you dollar for dollar up to $150,000.”
     River Society members are those who contribute $1,000 or more to TLC to support annual operations. Donors to the Our Water, Our Land River Society Challenge will be announced at the 25th Anniversary River Society Soiree in the fall.

     Our Water, Our Land is TLC's campaign to grow our Land Opportunity Fund and to steward our conservation lands. Thanks to many generous donors, TLC has raised $3.7 million toward the $5.5 million goal.

     For more information, go to the Our Water, Our Land website or contact Tracy Joseph, director of development.
     (* a pledge to the campaign can be paid over 3 to 5 years)

8. Message of the Month: Keeping an eye out

To paraphrase the "Car Talk" guys, the Message of the Month has been on summer vacation. Actually, more like a nine-month sabbatical. Now refreshed and infused with a great bunch of new messages, the Message of the Month feature is ready for a triumphant return. So without further ado...

     "I occasionally hike in the Johnston Mill Preserve. It is a wonderful preserve, and I appreciate all that you do as stewards of it. This past Saturday, someone was ..."  —John G., Chapel Hill
