1. TLC Kicks off Our Water, Our Land Campaign at 25th Anniversary Gala

A festive, lively crowd of 300 TLC supporters and members heard the news first when they attended the 25th Anniversary Gala on February 29:  TLC has launched the most ambitious fundraising campaign in its history.  Through Our Water, Our Land:  A Campaign to Conserve our Community’s Natural Heritage, TLC seeks to raise $5.5 million for land conservation and stewardship.  With $3.5 million in hand, we have two more years to raise the remaining $2 million.  With the Triangle's population projected to double to nearly 3 million people by 2030, our community has arrived at a crossroads. Rapid development and population growth create an urgent need to conserve open spaces, farms, and natural areas.  Our Water, Our Land will strengthen TLC's  capacity to respond quickly and deliberately to conservation opportunities.  Click here to learn more about this unprecedented conservation campaign for the Triangle.  And click here to see photos from the Gala.

2. 25th Anniversary Outings Continue throughout 2008

TLC's special 25th Anniversary outings offer lots of chances to walk in the woods, meet like-minded outdoorsy types and just enjoy basking in the glow of old Sol.  And, your next opportunity is right around the bend:  On Saturday, March 15, we’re throwing open the doors of Johnston Mill Nature Preserve to a full day of activities, followed by a full moon's night of activities on March 21. In 1999 TLC purchased 296 acres to create Johnston Mill Nature Preserve on the banks of New Hope Creek in Chapel Hill. Since the preserve opened in 2001 thousands of visitors  have hiked the preserve's trails.  Click here to learn more about TLC's special 25th anniversary outings.

3. Calling all Volunteers!  Spring is buzzing with Events....Beginning on St. Patrick's Day

We have many exciting events lined up this spring, and we need YOU to make them all happen!  We are recruiting volunteers for three events described below.  If you would like to volunteer for any (or ALL!) of these events, please contact Marisa Bryant at mbryant@tlc-nc.org or 919-833-3662 (ext. 111).

March 17th – TLC 5% Day at A Southern Season

On St. Patrick’s Day, A Southern Season will donate 5% of in-store retail sales to TLC’s efforts to protect critical open space in the Triangle.  Along with a percentage of sales, A Southern Season is also giving TLC day-long access to their Clock Tower Stage, just inside the front entrance of the store. TLC staff and volunteers will have an information/membership table set up there throughout the day. Volunteers are needed for 2-hour shifts from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Click here to visit the store's website for directions and hours.

April 19 – Burt’s Bees 1st Annual Planet Earth Celebration

Burt’s Bees is presenting a “fun-filled, interactive experience that will bring together our community to celebrate our planet while learning practical ways individuals can help make our local and global environment healthy.”  This green festival will take place on the grounds of the Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh.  TLC will have an information/membership table at this event.  Volunteers are needed for 2-hour shifts from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

June 7 - Land Trust Day

It's never too early to put Land Trust Day on your calendar! On the first Saturday in June, businesses across the state show their support for their local land trusts by donating a percentage of their sales, supporting membership drives, or by making donations. Great Outdoor Provision Company, a Raleigh-based outdoor gear retailer, began Land Trust Day in 1992 as a way of giving back to groups that are protecting the great outdoors of North Carolina.  We need 20-30 volunteers to staff TLC information and membership tables from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the four Triangle-area Great Outdoor Provision Company stores. If you want to plug into Land Trust Day sooner, we are also looking for volunteers to help recruit new businesses to participate in Land Trust Day.

4.  Aveda and TLC Team up for Earth Month Again in 2008

TLC is proud to have been selected once again as an official Aveda Earth Month Partner. In 2007, Aveda’s Earth Month giving exceeded $2.1 million to meet clean water needs around the globe. This year, Aveda is again focusing its Earth Month efforts on promoting clean water and has set a global fundraising goal of $2.3 million.  TLC will work with Triangle-area Aveda salons, spas, Experience Centers and the Aveda Institute Chapel Hill to raise money and increase awareness of TLC. Through “Appointments for the Earth," local salons will make a donation to TLC for each salon service on a certain day. You can purchase Earth Month t-shirts and candles at participating Aveda locations.  Visit www.aveda.com to find the salon or retail location near you and ask about their upcoming Earth Month activities.   Stay tuned for updates in the next E-News!

6. March Members of the Month:  Roz and Ken Winter

High school sweethearts from Raleigh, Roz & Ken Winter escaped the “high-intensity urban life” when they bought a 90-acre farmstead south of Siler City in 1996. (They donated a conservation easement to TLC in 2002.)  Read more about the Winters by clicking here.  And visit this web page next week to hear their audio interview!

7. Nature Quiz and Goodbye from the Editor

Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's Nature Limerick.  In case you have forgotten the limerick, here you go:

Far east from the snows of Pike's Peak,
Lies a treasure the brash and the brave seek.
"Find the geocache," they're told,
"Who knows - you might find gold!"
During the Step Back in Time Tour at Mark's Creek

Well, dear readers, with a heavy heart I must bid you farewell.  Don't worry -- this is not the end of E-News, just a change in editorial power, er, management.   On April 1, I start a new position as director of communications for Audubon North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  But never fear!  E-News -- and possibly the Nature Limerick --- will go on.  So, here's the limerick for March.  Remember, all you have to do is figure out the missing last word, which rhymes with the last word in the first and second lines.  (Note - this is a two-word answer, but only the second word rhymes as described above.)  We have a new system for selecting a winner, suggested by a faithful reader:  We will draw a winner from all the correct answers we receive.  To be eligible, email your response to enews@tlc-nc.org  by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 7.  And we're offering a spiffy new prize:  A brand spanking new TLC 25th Anniversary canvas shopping bag!  OK, here's a clue:  The missing two words refer to an early spring flower that can be seen blooming right now at places like Johnston Mill Nature Preserve.

One early spring day, while feeling rather silly,
I found myself outdoors, running willy-nilly.
Ambling along the banks of New Hope Creek,
I spied a flower of which the poets speak:
"Ah, the first herald of spring -- the dainty _ _ _ _ _  _ _ _ _."
