1. TLC's 25th Anniversary Gala plans bubbling along - Friday, February 29, 2008
The TLC elves are in full throttle party-planning mode in preparation for TLC's 25th Anniversary Gala on Friday, February 29. We won't burst their little elfin bubbles by giving away any of the surprises they have in store for Gala attendees, but let's just say, it's going to be one don't-miss event! After all, by our highly scientific calculations, TLC's 25th anniversary is a once in a lifetime event. Not only that, we're sure that our attentive readers have noticed that the Gala is scheduled for a very auspicious date -- the 29th of February -- one of those leap year days that you don't see all the time. A growing number of companies and individuals have generously signed on to sponsor the event (see list below) and sponsorships are still available. Visit the TLC website to learn more about the event. Invitations will be mailed to TLC members and friends in mid-January so stay tuned for more details. Tickets will also be available for purchase on the TLC website (www.triangleland.org) in mid-January.

4. Running out of Gift Ideas for Mrs. McGillicutty? Give the gift of TLC!
Ah, December in the
Triangle. The smell of sunscreen wafting through the air. The
sound of flip-flops slapping on the sidewalk. Chestnuts roasting on an
open fire . . . wow, the weather this month has been really confusing. If the confusion has
affected your gift-buying skills, here's a thought:
This year, why not give a friend or family member a membership in TLC?
As a TLC member, your gift recipient will have the satisfaction of helping save the places
they love in the Triangle and will also be invited to participate in special TLC events
and outings. Visit the gift membership page on the TLC website by
clicking
here.
5. Pension Protection Act and other creative ways to give
TLC supporters can still benefit from the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which created a window of opportunity for conservation supporters to receive more tax benefits by making donations of IRA assets to qualifying non-profits. Through the end of the 2007 tax year, people over the age of 70 ½ can transfer up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities without generating income tax. For information about making an IRA donation to TLC, contact Tracy Joseph, Director of Development, at tracy@tlc-nc.org or (919) 833-3662 ext. 115. As always, potential donors should discuss their options with their legal and financial advisors.
iGive.com is an online shopping portal where you can specify that a portion of your online purchases be donated to TLC. Visit www.igive.com, type "Triangle Land Conservancy" into the keyword search box, and register. You can shop at more than 680 online stores through iGive.
Goodsearch.com is a search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it just like any search engine and it's powered by Yahoo! Go to www.goodsearch.com and enter Triangle Land Conservancy as the charity you want to support. If 500 people search four times a day, they could raise about $7,300 in a year without spending a dime. Be sure to spread the word.

6. TLC on YouTube
You can now view TLC's work on our YouTube "channel," which features a short video highlighting some of our scenic conservation projects. Thanks to TLC's communications intern, Sarah Brown, for helping TLC strengthen its presence on the Web and helping spread the word to a larger audience. We will keep you informed of more Web and video projects in future issues of E-News. Click here to visit TLC on YouTube.
7. TLC Nature Quiz
Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's Nature Quiz. In case you have forgotten the quiz, here's the nature limerick with the missing word:
A young wild turkey named "Dude,"
Was scrounging in the woods for food.
Upon spying another,
Who looked just like his brother,
He said: "Hey man, are you from my BROOD?"
This month's limerick is written in honor of this anniversary year when we will celebrate TLC's many accomplishments over the past 25 years. All you have to do is figure out the missing last word, which rhymes with the last word in the first and second lines. The first person to email ida@tlc-nc.org with the correct answer wins a cutting-edge TLC baseball cap. OK, here's a clue....Temple Flat Rock was the first property TLC acquired. This limerick refers to the name of the second preserve that TLC established, which is a Wake County property that was donated to TLC in 1984.
Conservationists quiver in their socks
When that old opportunity knocks.
So it was in '84,
In TLC's days of yore,
When we received the donation of The _ _ _ _ _.
