| Description |
Protected acreage in the Mark's Creek Lowlands is a mix of forest and agricultural lands, streams and wetlands. The protected land is the result of a joint public-private conservation effort aimed at preserving at-risk land in the Mark's Creek area of southeast Wake and northern Johnston counties. Partners in the conservation effort are TLC, The Trust for Public Land, and Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space.
Mark's Creek flows through these lands and is joined by two other streams, Gin Creek and Sandy Branch. Beaver ponds on each of the creeks flood 18 acres, creating important habitat for wintering waterfowl and a breeding ground for amphibians and turtles. The wetlands also filter pollutants, helping to keep Mark's Creek clean before it flows into the Neuse River. |
