Green Jamboree 2009
The Irvin Farm is a 269-acre haven of farmland and forest in Orange County west of Carrboro. It's a beautiful setting, the perfect place for our annual celebration of conservation.
June is Eat Local Month and Green Jamboree was an Eat Local event, with Lip Service Catering providing a delicious, locally grown picnic dinner. For the adults in the crowd, we had locally brewed libations from Carolina Brewery. For the kids in the crowd -- OK, adults too! -- we offered frozen treats from everybody’s local favorites: Maple View Farm ice cream and Locopops!
You couldn’t eat the music, but longtime local favorites The Bluegrass Experience sustained uswith their diverse menu of good music thoughtfully arranged and well-performed.
Activities throughout the day engaged party-goers in learning more about the natural world—-and teaching a few things about how to Live Green at Home. Fun, hands-on learning opportunities included:
-
Creating Bird and Butterfly Gardens with Native Plants - presented by Stefan Bloodworth, curator of the Blomquist Garden of Native Plants at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, with thanks to the NC Native Plant Society.
-
Backyard Composting - presented by Bob Peoples of the NC Botanical Garden at UNC-Chapel Hill.
-
Birdhouse Building - with a demonstration by craftsman Dave Ringenburg and bluebird house building by the guests!
-
PEAK (Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids) - presented by REI, a program of games, activities and lessons that spills out of a stuffed backpack and teaches kids the seven Leave No Trace principles.
-
Hands on Eco-tivities for kids and parents - presented by TLC’s Irvin Learning Farm.
-
Turtle Talk! - presented by Irvin Farm neighbor and Box Turtle rescuer Jennifer Ginsburg
-
Goats! - presented Alix Bowman's Goat Patrol, parents and kids can meet and feed these cute kids!
-
Plus... Chickens! ... Guided Nature Walks! ... Irvin Farm Eco-Scavenger Hunt! ... Hay Rides! ... Fishing! ... Corntoss! ... And more!
Green Jamboree isn't just a great party - it also serves as TLC's annual membership meeting. We shared the good news of our recent successes and recognized the people who helped make them possible.
Congratulations to the Conservation Corps, TLC's Volunteers of the Year!
