Stella Boswell & Craig Heinly

New TLC members Stella Boswell and Craig Heinly have called the Triangle home for almost 20 years. Along with daughters Julia and Claire, and their pet rabbit Daffodil, they live and work in Durham.

Stella grew up primarily in San Antonio, Texas and came to Durham as a Duke undergraduate student in 1986. After graduating and working in Durham, she attended law school and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill School of Law in 1995. Since then she has practiced law and worked for a legal organization. She now counsels students and alumni at Duke.

Craig grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Blue Devils called him to the Triangle as well: he came to Durham in 1987 as a Duke undergraduate student and has been here ever since. After college, he worked at the Duke University Medical Center and then went to Duke Medical School. He completed a residency in dermatology at Duke in 2003 and joined Triangle Dermatology in Durham.

Stella remembers first hearing about TLC in the late 1980s or early 1990s from friends and co-workers at an outdoor provisions store in Durham. TLC's increased visibility and our purchase of a piece of land near Stella and Craig's home recently encouraged them to become members.

Another catalyst for their decision to join TLC was the birth of their niece, Ella. "The idea that TLC's mission is about protecting places for our children is also what motivated us to make a donation on behalf of our niece, who was born in Chapel Hill in December," Stella explains. "She will be a part of the Triangle community and deserves to have all the things we value still here as she grows."

Stella and Craig have supported various environmental organizations for years, but say it feels very different to be able to contribute to an organization whose work is visible to them every day: they drive by a TLC property when taking one of their daughters to school!

"It's the 'Think Globally, Act Locally' slogan in practice," says Stella. "In addition to just seeing results, it gives a real and tangible benefit as we raise our kids here. One of the most appealing things about the Triangle to us is the green spaces, the ability to be someplace to go for a hike or a mountain bike ride within minutes. Now that we have kids, it's also about protecting that for them as the Triangle experiences so much growth."
