About TLCSince 1983, TLC has been conserving natural and working lands in our six-county region. These abundant and beautiful places are some of our region's most attractive features. The work we do to conserve them is critical to our region's quality of life. Wherever you live in our region, chances are that you're within easy reach of TLC conservation land. From a white pine forest on the Deep River to a rhododendron-sparkled jewel along Moccasin Creek, from a rare Piedmont prairie in Wake to a verdant dairy farm in Orange, TLC has saved many of the places you love. We seek a balance between growth and conservation. That means conserving more than 45,000 acres of our most beautiful and sensitive lands—to protect the quality of the water we drink and of the air we breathe, and to leave a healthy environment for future generations to enjoy. With your help we can achieve this balance. Join the thousands of members of our organizations who give their support through donations and volunteer energy. Our Missionis to protect important open space—stream corridors, forests, wildlife habitat, farmland and natural areas—in Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Orange and Wake counties to help keep our region a healthy and vibrant place to live and work. What We DoWe fulfill our mission by identifying the most important natural and working lands in the region, then using a variety of conservation methods to ensure the permanent protection of the land. To date, TLC has protected more than 9,500 acres of the most important natural and working lands in the Triangle. Please visit the Our Work section of our Web site for details. TLC is funded by our 2,000+ members, which include individuals, families and area businesses and organizations. We run separate fundraising campaigns aimed at protecting specific properties or areas. We have been very successful in applying for grants from the state and private foundations—grants from the North Carolina Clean Water Management Fund have been the backbone of the recent New Hope Creek, Deep River and Little River campaigns. What is a Land Trust?Land trusts are organizations that operate independently of government to help communities save their land heritage. The 1,500-plus land trusts operating in the United States have protected more than 9.3 million acres of land. Twenty-four local land trusts are working in North Carolina to save the places you love. Local land trusts are experts at helping interested landowners find ways to protect their land in the face of ever-growing development pressure. Visit the Landowners section to read about the various ways TLC helps local landowners conserve their property.
