Faces of the Campaign:
The People Behind Our Water, Our Land

Peg Parker

A member of the Triangle Land Conservancy since 1990, Peg Parker drives her hybrid car from her home in Chapel Hill to Raleigh every Monday to volunteer with the organization. A 40-year resident of Chapel Hill, she has seen development explode all over the Triangle. Closer to home, she has watched part of her neighborhood convert from woods, to golf course, back to woods, and now to institutional use.

Peg thinks the “Our Water, Our Land” campaign is important because it will give TLC the ability to leverage deals on important conservation lands. “Land is a finite resource: there are only so many acres. Conservation has to be done now,” she said.

Five years ago, Peg made an extraordinary gift to TLC, donating a 22-acre tract of land along the Rocky River in Chatham County that is now known as Wood’s Mill Bend Preserve. She and her husband, John, had enjoyed the property with their two children, Ben and Claire, for nearly 30 years. After John passed away in 1993, and with her children grown, she wanted to ensure the land would be around for others to enjoy in the future. “I knew that with TLC the land would be preserved forever for people and their families to visit,” she said.

In addition to her generous gift to “Our Water, Our Land,” Peg has contributed to TLC’s Deep River, Little River, White Pines, and New Hope Creek campaigns. “I was glad when TLC approached me about this campaign,” she said, “I was happy to contribute.”
