Faces of the Campaign:
The People Behind Our Water, Our Land
John & Janice McAdams
It may seem like a contradiction that past TLC chairman John McAdams is president of a design firm that works with the land development industry, but John believes that development is acceptable as long as it is done in tandem with land protection.
“The pace of development is increasing in the Triangle,” he said, “And that’s a good thing for the economy. But the pace of land protection also needs to increase.”
Both John and Janice enjoy the outdoors: John grew up a Boy Scout in Raleigh, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout and a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, and Janice took part in Girl Scouts growing up in the mountains of North Carolina.
John became involved with TLC in the early 90s when he contacted the organization on behalf of The John R. McAdams Company and offered the company’s surveying services free of charge. In 1997, John and his wife, Janice, became TLC members. John served on TLC’s land protection committee before being asked to serve on the board, which he eventually chaired from 2004 to 2007.
The couple’s donation to Our Water, Our Land is their first gift to a TLC campaign. John hopes the campaign will accelerate TLC’s pace of conservation and that it will expand TLC’s public awareness and membership base as well.
“TLC’s work benefits not only hikers and canoeists, but also the greater Triangle community,” he said.
