The first book Gaddy was required to read in school had a profound impact on his life. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, based in Gaddy’s neighborhood, is about thriving in inhospitable circumstances. The tree in the book, the tree of heaven, thrives without water and light and can be found throughout Brooklyn. Gaddy took the message of this book to heart and used it as motivation for his life.
When he graduated from high school, he was awarded a basketball scholarship to Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia. While he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, he also spent time outdoors in nature.
“In Brooklyn, there are few places to enjoy nature,” says Gaddy. “Once I experienced the outdoors and habitats, the need for a balance in development became clear to me. If we do not conserve, growth will take over. While I am all for development, there is no reason there should be any more concrete jungles like New York City. Growth needs to happen responsibly with a balance and an appreciation for natural things.”
Gaddy earned a law degree at Georgetown University. After working as a trial lawyer and for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, he began working in the legal department of Florida Power, which was bought by Carolina Power and Light to become Progress Energy. Five years ago, Gaddy transferred to the Triangle and he is now the Regional Vice President for the northern region of Progress Energy.
Shorty after arriving in the area, Gaddy joined TLC. He is currently a board member and works on the Conservation Strategies Committee.
“What I really enjoy about working on the Conservation Strategies Committee is the opportunity to help TLC find ways to sustain its mission of protecting open space forever. I enjoy anticipating future pressures and challenges, and working on ways to ensure the mission continues in this growing region.”
“I also enjoy working with the other people committed to making TLC a success. The staff is enthusiastic, dedicated and smart. The executive director is motivated and focused. The Board is comprised of talented, busy people from all walks of life who eagerly give of their time. The people working for TLC and their passion keep me excited to be part of this effort.”
In addition to giving his time to TLC’s board of directors, Gaddy and Progress Energy also gave graciously to the Our Water, Our Land campaign.
"I think it is important to support the Our Water, Our Land campaign so TLC will have the money available to purchase important land as it becomes available.”
“Progress Energy eagerly supports the campaign as well. We strive to be a good corporate citizen and want to help preserve the environment. We use some natural resources in what we do, especially water, and therefore, we have an obligation to support both water and habitat conservation.”
Gaddy is a very active member of the community. He is the outgoing chair of the Morrisville Chamber, and a board member for the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Raleigh Area Development Authority and the North Carolina State University College of Management.
Gaddy is the proud father of two girls, Selena (17) and Brianna (15). In his spare time, Gaddy enjoys reading, watching movies and golfing.
“When I’m golfing, I can really stop and smell the roses. It’s a great way to spend time outdoors, and see natural habitats – especially when I’m not golfing well and need to follow my ball into the rough.”
