Join one of our monthly First Saturday Walks this June! This beautiful hike will meander through our beautiful and diverse White Pines Nature Preserve. Because of it’s incredible ecosystem\, surrounded by the White Pine and cooled by the confluence of the Rocky and Deep Rivers\, it can be up to 10 degrees cooler than the neighboring city of Pittsboro! So it is an excellent location to escape our North Carolina heat.
\nTh is will be a moderate 3-mile hike over about 2 hours. There will be multip le stops along the way to learn about the ecology and the history of the p reserve. Please make sure to wear good walking shoes and bring a full wate r bottle along with bug spray and sunscreen if you would like it!

Come join us for a crisp Fall morning hike at our White Pines Nature Preserve.
\nOn this easy 3.5 mile hike lead by our trail guide\, Pam\, you will see five varieties of p ine trees. This preserve contains species not typically found in the North Carolina Piedmont\, but still remain here from the last ice age due to th e rivers surrounding the area creating a microclimate. You can also keep a n eye out for white-tailed deer\, beavers\, gray foxes\, and muskrats.

\nThe Great Backyar d Bird Count is a yearly citizen science project that happens all over the world and this year it is from February 17th-20th. You can participat e anywhere from your own backyard to one of our nature preserves! \nExplore the diverse river floodplains of the Rocky and the Deep on th is beautiful morning hike. Through this journey we will find evidence of t he rich geological history that defines the area and allows for a diverse range of flora to persist. This moderate\, 2-mile hike will culminate with locating the rare Eastern Buttercup Phacelia in flower. This is a free ev ent but preregistration is required.
\nPlease be aware that White Pines has a decent amount of topographical change. The beginni ng of the hike will take the White Pines and River trails down slope to th e confluence\, and the second half of the program hikes back up and out th e switchbacks of Schoolkids Trail. These trails can be steep for some visi tors so stable walking shoes and hiking poles can be useful tools to bring if you have them.

\nOn this moderate\, 3.5 mile hike lead by our trail guide\, Pam\, you will see fiv e varieties of pine trees. This preserve contains species not typically fo und in the North Carolina Piedmont\, but still remain here from the last i ce age due to the rivers surrounding the area creating a microclimate. You can also keep an eye out for white-tailed deer\, beavers\, gray foxes\, a nd muskrats.

Stilt grass growths thick and tall\, covering everything near it \, including other grasses\, baby trees (saplings)\, and native ground cov er. It’s easy to feel like there is just too much of it\, and give up\, bu t we are not going to let that happen! Especially because it’s so easy to pull up!
\nInstead\, a great\, big group of volunteers (families wit h kids welcome!) will gather on September 9th to pull up as much stilt gra ss around Walnut Grove Loop as we can. Over the last two years\, volunteer s have cleared away hundreds of invasive privet\, multiflora and olive pla nts\, making room for natives – and stilt grass. Now we need to take the n ext step and protect those native species.

We will be foraging at Pluck Farm on the weste rn side of the Triangle\, which also hosts Steel String’s Outdoor Brewery along with a diffe rent food truck everyday they are open. \nCome join us for an early morning hike at our White Pines Nature Preserve!
\nOn this moderate\, 3.5 mile hike lead by our trail guide\, Pam\, you will see five varieties of pine trees. This preserve contains species not typically fou nd in the North Carolina Piedmont\, but still remain here from the last ic e age due to the rivers surrounding the area creating a microclimate. Thro ughout the hike\, you can also keep an eye out for white-tailed deer\, bea vers\, gray foxes\, and muskrats. Wear comfortable walking shoes and brin g a full water bottle! This is a free event\, but preregistration is requi red.
\nThe pace of this hike will be just under 1.5 mph. Please note that there is decent topographical change at this preserve that may be di fficult for some visitors. \nWh ile this is a shorter trail system\, there is a decent amount of topograph ical change and a set of steep stairs to take you to the top of the bluffs . Some visitors may find this difficult\, but please reach out if you have any questions before you go. This is a free event\, but preregistration i s require.
